Opticians insurance news - Contact lenses warning for consumers
Buying contact lenses from an outlet that is not a licensed outlet and is without correct opticians insurance cover has the potential to cause consumers considerable health problems, according to experts.
This is because such contact lenses are often poorly fitted or not appropriate to the consumer's condition, factors which can lead to discomfort and further vision problems.
Furthermore, buying so-called cosmetic contact lenses, which change the colour of a person's eyes, from non-licensed shops which don't have opticians insurance policies in place can cause similar problems.
Dr Glenn Corbin is a doctor who recently had to treat a girl for temporary blindness caused by contact lenses bought from an unlicensed small business.
He explains, "Just because these lenses are nonprescription doesn't make them any less dangerous. What's worse is these kids, and even adults, buy them without any care or instructions or professional guidance to see if they should even have a contact lens on their eye."
And, because such consumers have bought their contact lenses from vendors without opticians insurance, it means that, in the event of injury, they may struggle to be able to make a liability claim against the seller.
